Does the Opening of High-Speed Railway Lines Reduce the Carbon Intensity of China’s Resource-Based Cities?

The carbon intensity of China’s resource-based cities (RBCs) is much higher than the national average due to their relatively intensive mode development. Low transformation RBCs an important way achieve goal reaching emissions peak in 2030. Based on panel data from 116 China 2003 2018, this study takes opening high-speed railway (HSR) lines as a quasi-experiment, using time-varying difference-in-difference (DID) model empirically evaluate impact HSR line reducing RBCs. results show that can reduce RBCs, and was still true after considering possibility problems with endogenous selection bias applying relevant robustness tests. found have significant effect different types RBC, decline coal-based be greatest.
